Nexus 6P Review: The new king of Android

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the new Google Nexus 6P. With a price tag of around £450, the Nexus 6P is not only more slimline in looks, but also has been slimmed down on price.

The construction materials of the Nexus 6P have impressive credentials; the phone shares the same manufacturing materials as the aluminium used in aeroplane construction. With the internal workings, the Nexus 6P is more like a mini pocket computer than that of a phone.

Looks wise, the Nexus 6P is cutting edge. With beautiful curved edges, combined with the sleek aluminium and a slimline look that can easily fit in your pocket, it is easy to see why many critics are calling the Nexus 6P “the most beautiful Android.” Within the sleek looks and ability to fit it in your pocket, these are not the only plus points. The phone has been designed with a handy ridged power button, which doubles up as a button to launch the camera when it is pressed twice. There is also the point of fingerprint sensor, some people say that they find their muscle memory on it doesn’t work, others are raving about it. However, this seems to be the only part of the phone that people are divided over.

For those of us who struggle with battery life, the Android 6.0 brings the wonderful feature of doze; which helps preserve your battery throughout the day. Far outstripping those dedicated to the iOS, where battery life is a common complaint. The Nexus 6P has a 3,450mAh battery, meaning that it can easily last a full day of heavy usage. Hooray for not having to carry round a charging cable everywhere or endure a flat battery! What does this mean for users? Your phone does not lose 20-30% of your battery life, when the phone is on standby.

For the budding photographers out there, the Nexus 6P features an impressive 12.3 megapixel camera. Where it beats its competitors is the image stabilisation and the ability to take better photos in low light conditions.

Our view on the Nexus 6P? The price tag is not only attractive, beating other competitors by a clear £100; the phone features pack a punch and weigh up to the likes of iOS operating systems and other top Android phones.

Everything you need to know about the IPhone 6s

The IPhone 6S uses the iOS 9 and it was first unveiled at an Apple press event on the 9th of September 2015. Its most innovative feature is Touch 3D. This is a real game changer and yet it is such a simple idea and mechanism that it is surprising that it hasn’t appeared before now. It allows you to touch different places on your phone and have them register as touches. You can press and hold and you can swipe, and you can do it whilst your fingers are touching other parts of the screen. It is going to change the way that phones work and will change how future apps and games are designed.

The 4.7-inch screen is a little smaller than the average phone. The resolution is 1,334 pixels by 750 pixels, and it has a 326 PPI, which is 1.3x sharper than the average phone that has come out this year. It uses a Retina HD (IPS LCD) display, has a 12 mega pixel back camera and a 5 mega pixel front camera. It has a standard smartphone lens aperture, and may capture 4k HD videos, which is the highest standard a smartphone can capture.

The camera has touch focus, slow-mo, auto focus, HDR capture, face detection, panorama, digital image stabilization, smile detection, burst mode, geo-tagging, an LED flash, and sound & shot. The amount of talk time the IPhone 6S allows is 14 hours, which was a good number a few years ago, but nowadays is about average. The battery is a lithium polymer 1,810 mAh battery, which is a below average size compared to modern phones. It has 240 hours of standby time. The body material of the phone is aluminium, which is light and strong.

The phone’s dimensions are 138.30 mm x 67.10 mm x 7.10 mm, which is 22% thinner than the average phone. It is around 143g in weight, which is about average for smartphones these days. The iPhone 6S has a dual core Apple A9 system. The iPhone has a CPU that runs at 2 GHz. This makes it a very fast phone and it has 2GB of RAM, so it can handle any modern apps along with a few background processes too. It has a dual core processor and PowerVR GT7600 graphics processor. You can choose devices that store 16GB, 64GB or 128GB. There are no removable storage options on the Apple iPhone 6S.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4: The tablet that can replace your laptop

The new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is the latest slate tablet produced by the technology giant. It has Windows 10 which Microsoft has designed to be a desktop and mobile-ready operating system. Sadly, this means it is found slightly wanting in both areas, but is still far better than Windows 8.

What you need to know

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 costs a little more than the average 12-inch tablet, but Microsoft are promoting it as a laptop replacement which makes it cheaper by comparison. Many of their Microsoft Surface Pro 4 adverts show the device with its keyboard attachments, and it makes sense that they may try to promote it as a tablet/laptop since it runs on Windows 10, which is ideally more of desktop operating system anyway. Its dimensions are 11.5 in. x 7.93 in. x 0.33 inches.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 battery

The battery life is 9 hours, which is 13% longer than the average tablet battery life; though the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 may go for longer depending upon what you have it doing. For example, reading e-books will take up less power than a GPS powered navigation system.

The screen and resolution of the Microsoft Surface Pro 4

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has a 12.3 inch screen, which is the length from one corner to the other corner diagonally. It has a 2,736 by 1,824 pixels resolution with 267 PPI, which makes it 57% sharper than the average tablet.

Data and RAM

The tablet has a whopping amount of RAM at 4GB, which is more than enough for any task your tablet will need to undertake. It can store 128GB of data, and there is a MicroSD card so you can expand the memory further. Also, do not forget that you can rely on cloud storage if needed. The internal storage options are 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 camera

The camera has a 5 mega pixel front camera and an 8 mega pixel back camera. It can capture 1080p HD video, which is the highest quality a tablet is able to record with. There is also plenty of software on the device to ensure your images come out clean and smooth.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Review: The New Rival Tablet

At a remarkable 5.6mm thin, Samsung boast that the Tab S2 is the world’s thinnest tablet. Coming in two different sizes, with both an 8 inch and a larger 9.7 inch model available, the Tab S2 is a multi-functional tablet that is also great to look at. But just how far has the new model come from the Tab S?

As well as being thinner than the Tab S, the Tab S2 also has a different aspect ratio to the preceding model. Although the 16:10 ratio of the Tab S made it ideal for watching video, it was awkward and impractical for several other functions including reading eBooks or other texts. The new 4:3 represents the best of both worlds, making it ideal for several functions. The Super AMOLED display also provides great clarity and rich and vibrant colour.

It is also packed with features. There is a fingerprint scanner integrated into the home button which feels super-futuristic. Multitasking is smooth with the high speed Exynos processor, making it easy to listen to music while browsing your e-mails or reading the news. It also features SideSync, which allows you to transfer the interface of your Samsung smartphone onto the tablet screen and compose text messages through it.

The Tab S2 has both a 8 megapixel rear and 2.1 megapixel front facing camera. A fair, but not outstanding rear camera quality for a tablet, it has albeit improved on the previous model by including a wider aperture that lets in more light.

Perhaps one thing that the Tab S2 really lacks in is battery life. One of the sacrifices Samsung had to make in order to make the tablet thinner was to make the batteries smaller, and therefore less powerful. It also lacks the wireless charging capabilities of Samsung’s latest smartphones. With that and the short battery life in mind, using the Tab S2 on the move could become an issue.

Overall rating: 3.5/5
Although the Tab S2 boasts several great features and is one of the most sleek and stylish looking tablets on the market, there are still some areas, including camera quality, that have not been improved upon from the previous model, the Tab S. Factor in that the Tab S2 has both a short battery life and no wireless charging capabilities and you’re left with a device that falls just short of the tablet elite.

LG G4 Review

If you’re looking for an Android smartphone that’s modern, sophisticated, and technologically advanced, you might be considering the LG G4. But just how well does this new contender perform, and is it worth the money?

The first thing you’ll notice about the LG G4 is the striking new design: LG have decided to go for a classy and smooth leather back that’s surprisingly comfortable on the fingers. You can choose from a classic tan colour or a sophisticated black, and it makes a nice change from the plain glass backs of other handsets. The G4 has a 5.5-inch screen, which is large enough to see everything in detail and small enough that it fits comfortably into your hand without any of the unwieldy feel of larger phones. There is also a discreet and handy slot for a Micro-SD card if you feel the need for extra memory.

The display is one of the best things about this phone: LG have gone for a stand-out 2,560×1,440 display. The brand-new IPS Quantum panel allows the G4 to use a type of liquid crystal to improve brightness and colour quality, and it shows – the colours are vibrant and rich, and the whites are bright and pure, with fantastic contrast. If there’s one problem with it, it’s that the auto-brightness isn’t always as accurate as you might like, but this isn’t usually much of a problem. In terms of display, this is one of the sharpest and definitely the most colourful on the market.

In terms of features, the new camera is one of the most impressive. The 16-megapixel rear camera now uses a colour spectrum sensor which is completely unique amongst smartphones, which can read colours in the same way the human eye does. However it works, the photo quality is excellent and the colours impressively accurate. Another feature that’s worth mentioning is the Knock On feature, which allows you to knock the screen lightly to turn the phone on. This unique feature is hyper-intuitive and saves you from having to use the buttons.

In conclusion, the LG G4 is an incredible phone that has one of the best displays on the market, an impressive camera and a stylish and unique design. Therefore, if you want a modern Android smartphone that’s sophisticated and technologically capable, you can’t do better than the LG G4.

The Benefits of a SIM only Deal

canstockphoto4698778When the time come to purchase a new mobile phone plan there’s a tendency to blindly sign up to yet another 24 month plan as you become tempted by the prospect of a shiny new handset.

And yes, while sometimes the desire for the latest piece of technology is just too much, a lot of the time it is worth considering the benefits of a SIM only deal.

There are two major benefits to a SIM only deal.

Firstly, cost. As the name suggests, a SIM only deal means you are only purchasing the SIM and paying the monthly tariff that comes with it. There is no ‘up-front cost’ that needs to be paid and no expensive handset to be paid off over the course of 24 months. To illustrate the difference we can look at a 600 minute, unlimited data tariff with Three. With an iPhone 5s handset you would pay £39 a month. With a SIM-only deal? Just £22 a month. Quite the saving.

The second major benefit is flexibility. It is increasingly difficult to find a mobile phone plan with a handset that doesn’t last less than 24 months. 2 years is a long time in which a lot can happen. For example: a change in financial fortune, a move to an area with patchy network service, or simply no longer liking your phone.

A SIM only deal negates these problems. All SIM only deal are month-to-month contracts meaning that you’re only required to give a month’s notice before terminating the contract. Tired of your provider in June? You can be with a new one by July with no financial penalty.

Finally, it is worth clearing up some misconceptions about SIM only deals that often dissuade people from switching to them.

Firstly, if you move to a SIM only deal you can still retain your existing number. All you have to do is obtain your Port Authorisation Code (PAC) from your existing network before you switch to your new SIM. It is as easy as that. Secondly, switching to a SIM only deal doesn’t mean you lose the perks of being on a full handset included contract. Whether these perks are discounted rates while traveling abroad, free 4G or the ability to use your phone as a wireless hot-spot, most networks will extend these privileges without any extra cost to SIM only customers.

The Cool Features We Should all be Using on our IPhone 6

The iPhone 6 is finally here and is bigger and badder than ever before. While the iPhone 6 offers all of the most popular features of the previous iPhones, there are also some great new features thrown into the mix that are just waiting to be enjoyed. Here are some of the best features of the iPhone 6:

Voice Over LTE
This great feature allows iPhone 6 users to talk on the phone while surfing the web. Not only has the voice quality been improved for calls, but this handy feature means that you don’t have to be bored when stuck on a call for work or with a family member.

1080p 60fps Video Recording
Apple has really pushed the boundaries of video recording with this special feature and HD can be recorded at either 30 or 60 fps. This means that the image is crisper and clearer than ever before and iPhone 6 users are sure to have hours of fun shooting videos of football games, making family movies or even recording raucous nights out on the town. The amount of detail that is now available is very impressive and mimics professional video quality in the palm of your hand.

Hey Siri
Anyone who has ever used Siri will be familiar with the delays that are caused by having to hold down the feature on the Home screen. This has down been eradicated with the special new Hey Siri feature. Once it has been enabled, Siri will be activated any time you say ‘Hey Siri’, and you will receive an instant answer to your question without even having to touch the screen.

This feature is a real bonus for iPad owners and users. The Handoff feature allows calls that are received to the iPhone 6 to be displayed on the screen of the iPad and it even serves as a speaker to enhance the sound quality of the call. Text messages and other types of interactions will also by transferred onto the iPad, meaning that iPhone users will be free to use their device for other things while they are taking a call.

Display Zoom
This special feature enhances the look of the iPhone screen to make it crystal clear and highly defined. Things that were once too small to read on the screen suddenly become magnified to make it much easier and more enjoyable, which is particularly good for people with poor eyesight.
